About Robert Thong—the formal professional bio
Robert Thong is an independent consultant, speaker and writer on business strategy, collaborations and change in the bioscience sector. Over the past twenty-five years, Robert has collaborated with more than a hundred different pharmaceutical, biotech, medical equipment and healthcare organizations across a dozen countries in Europe, North America and Asia. In addition to articles in both independent industry magazines and peer-reviewed journals, his full-length book Biopharma R&D Partnerships was published in January 2016. Robert was a member of the independent Judging Panel for both the 2016 and the 2017 Scrip Awards in the Best Partnership Alliance, Licensing Deal of the Year and Best CRO categories.
During the 1990s, Robert co-headed the Gemini Consulting (now Cap Gemini) Life Sciences Group and then led the European Bioscience Business Unit at COBA-Renaissance. In the 2000s, he led Datamonitor’s Healthcare Division and subsequently founded two boutique management consultancies. He was also a non-executive director on the board of Alpharma (NYSE-listed mid-sized pharmaceutical and animal health company) from 2003 to 2006. Robert holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Imperial College London, and a Master’s degree in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management.

Hello, I’m Robert! Besides my consulting work and my writing, I also teach on various post-graduate Master’s programmes at the University of Cambridge, University College London, Karolinska Institutet and Grenoble Ecole de Management. What drives me is the immense professional and personal satisfaction I get from helping others improve their leadership, strategic decision-making, action implementation and day-to-day management. My professional activities take me regularly across Europe and occasionally to North America. Originally hailing from Malaysia, I was educated in England and the United States, and live in London with my wife Marie—we are avid fly fishermen and food & wine enthusiasts who have travelled extensively on six continents, both in pursuit of our leisure interests, and for quality time with our two children.
